Growing up in the United States, my passion for food took root from an early age. From cooking for loved ones to exploring different flavors, it has been a source of joy for me. While Americans may not always prioritize the intentional nature of their diet, I witnessed the profound impact it had on my own well-being.
Throughout my journey, I faced the daily battle of managing an autoimmune disease called Hashimoto's for the past 17 years. Striving to keep it in remission has become a central part of my life. Dealing with these personal health struggles, I have embraced a nutritional approach that draws heavily from a cleaner way of having better eating habits.
Below are the five foods I have avoided over the years:

Hot Dogs / Salamis
Processed meats are prevalent and challenging to avoid in the American diet. However, their consumption comes with potential risks due to their high salt and saturated fat content, which can contribute to an increased likelihood of developing certain cancers, including colorectal and breast cancer.
To make healthier choices, I have shifted my focus towards alternatives that offer high protein content while being low in salt and preservatives. A chick-pea salad sandwich has become a go-to option when there is craving for a protein-rich meal that aligns with my nutritional goals. Additionally, I love indulging in a vegan and gluten free brownie, for a sweet savory flavor, yet still has protein from the chia seeds. This not only satisfies my taste buds but also provides essential minerals like iron, calcium, folate, and magnesium, promoting overall well-being.
No Red Meat
Red med is an inflammatory detrimental impact on our health. Red meat, especially when processed or cooked at high temperatures, contains saturated fats and trans fats, which are known to raise the levels of LDL "bad" cholesterol in our bloodstream. This, in turn, increases the risk of cardiovascular issues and compromises heart health.
In my pursuit of healthier alternatives, I was pleasantly surprised by the deliciousness of quinoa black bean tacos. Replacing the conventional beef patty (or steak) with a black bean alternative not only satisfies my taste buds but also provides numerous health benefits. Pairing the quinoa black bean tacos with a nice lentil soup, creates a delightful combination that is not only economically friendly but also aligns with my commitment to being environmentally conscious, has amazing flavors, low in fat and high in protein, and high in fiber.
This helps in not only to avoid the negative health consequences associated with red meat consumption but also contribute to a more sustainable food choice. Taking into account the impact of our dietary choices on personal well-being and the environment, embracing plant-based alternatives presents an opportunity to nourish our bodies while reducing our ecological footprint.
Sugary sodas are gone
Regular consumption of sugary sodas, even just one to two cans a day or more, poses a potential significant risk of developing type 2 diabetes. That’s not good…These beverages are have excessive amounts of added sugars, which can lead to unstable blood sugar levels and insulin resistance. It's important to note that even sodas with artificial sweeteners may not be a better alternative. Artificial sweeteners, though low in calories, can have their own set of drawbacks. They have the potential to interfere with focus and concentration and, for some individuals, may even trigger migraines.
In my quest for healthier choices, I have found solace in the realm of refreshing, low-calorie beverages. Sparkling water such as Perrier, or La Croix (with some great options of flavors) offering a delightful and invigorating experience, especially if you want to put a nice twic of some lemon in there. Most of all, the best beverage is just water, you honestly can’t go wrong. At the end of the day, yes, we need to quench our thirst but also provide a range of potential health benefits, including antioxidant properties such as matcha tea as an alternative method for a soothing effect on the mind and body.
Sugar cereals for breakfast is not ideal for you
When our mornings are rushed and time is scarce, it can be tempting to rely on sugary breakfast cereals as a quick and convenient option. However, I have consciously chosen to avoid cereals that contain added sugars or unfamiliar ingredients. The excessive consumption of sugar can have detrimental effects on our well-being, including adverse impacts on blood pressure, weight gain, heightened inflammation, and an increased risk of developing diabetes. To replace these sugary breakfast cereals, I have discovered a wholesome and nourishing alternative that sets the tone for a healthy start to the day.
My go-to breakfast choice revolves around the delightful options is a delicious and nutritious strawberry banana smoothie. This refreshing and nutrient-packed smoothie provides a satisfying blend of flavors while offering a host of health benefits. Another alternative is wonderful bowl of Buckwheat, a nutrient-dense whole grain, contributes fiber, protein, and essential minerals to support optimal well-being. The vibrant strawberries lend natural sweetness and a burst of antioxidants to fortify the body.
By embracing either buckwheat or strawberry banana smoothie (and many other fabulous alternatives) as a breakfast option, I prioritize my health and enjoyment without compromising on convenience. It serves as a delicious reminder that nourishing ourselves need not be a time-consuming endeavor, and we can start each day on a vibrant and nourishing note.
Cream cheese is not your friend
While dairy products like cream cheese are often lauded for their calcium and protein content, not all cheese options offer the optimal health benefits. Personally, I steer clear of all dairy including cream cheese due to its limited protein content found in most popular consumer brands, providing merely around five grams per serving. Additionally, a mere ounce of cream cheese can contribute a staggering approximately 27 milligrams of cholesterol to your diet.
To replace cream cheese and still enjoy a delightful and flavorful spread, I turn to almond cheese as my go-to alternative. Almond cheese offers a delectable taste and creamy texture while providing a range of health benefits. Made from almonds, this plant-based cheese substitute is a rich source of protein and healthy fats. It offers a delightful balance of flavor and nutrition, allowing me to enjoy a savory spread without compromising my dietary goals. I embrace a dietary choice that aligns with my desire for wholesome, nutritious alternatives while exploring diverse flavors that enhance my meals. There are wonderful, flavorful options out there that are dairy free while getting the same amazing taste, dairy (guilt) free.
